Long-Finned Pilot Whales (Globicehala melas), stranding, Njarðvík, South West Iceland 07/2012

On the 28th July 2012 a large pod of about 200 Long-Finned Pilot Whales were getting alarmingly close to land near Njarðvík, South West Iceland. Last time this happen was in Þorlákshöfn in 1986 and in Njarðvík in 1957.
I was on a whale watching tour that went to help push the whales back out into deeper waters but our boat was too big to get in between them and the land. However, soon another smaller boat came that was able to push them away from land and then we could get in between as well to help push them further. The whales were obviously stressed and huddled together. Once we felt comfortable that they were a safe distance from land we left the area.
